Mary Vaux Walcott (1860-1940) was born in Philadelphia, PA. At age eight, she received a set of watercolors and began painting flowers, beginning a life-long vocation. Spending summers in the Canadian Rockies, she observed and painted the local flora. Returning there for more than 40 years, she produced hundreds of botanical studies. In 1914, she married Charles D. Walcott, a geologist, paleontologist, and secretary of the Smithsonian Institute. In 1925, the Smithsonian published North American Wild Flowers, a five-volume set containing 400 of Walcott’s paintings of native plants. Her work was acclaimed for its vivid color, detail, and accuracy.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a
Japanese artist, painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He is best known as the author of a woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the iconic print Great Wave Off Kanagawa. 

He did not begin this series until much later in his career at the age of 70. It was perhaps the idea of immortality associated with Mount Fuji in Japanese legends and culture that contributed to Hokusai’s obsession with the subject in later life.  The print series was so popular that he added ten more works after publication. In his most celebrated print, Mount Fuji is small in the distance as an enormous wave curls threateningly over ocean-tossed boats.

Candace Wheeler (New York, 1827-1923) was the first woman to work professionally in the decorative arts in America. An early feminist, she promoted careers in the arts for women and equality in the workplace. Wheeler founded the Society of Domestic Arts, which empowered women to turn domestic arts into financial independence. Her success led to a partnership with Louis C. Tiffany in a textile firm producing home décor. Our lively motif was inspired by Wheeler’s Bees with Honeycomb, designed in 1881 for Mark Twain’s Connecticut home. Frank Lloyd Wright March Balloons The work of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is known worldwide as pivotal to the development of modern architecture. Through an understanding of our relationship with the natural world, Wright’s designs were inspired by organic forms. Wright created this abstract design as one of a series of covers based on monthly themes for Liberty Magazine in 1927. The finished designs were never published because the magazine thought they were too abstract and radical. In the 19th century, naturalist/painter John J. Audubon sounded the alarm about vanishing nature. He noted in 1816, “Our Parakeets are very rapidly diminishing where 25 years ago they were plentiful, scarcely any are now to be seen.” The Carolina Parakeet - the only parrot native to the U.S. - became extinct in 1920. The species lives on in Audubon’s brilliant watercolor, as a pandemonium of parakeets jostle together in harmony. They remind us to appreciate and cherish our fragile ecosystem. John J.
