Known as a leader of the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements, Louis C. Tiffany (1848-1943) and his designers used his trademark favrile glass nature-inspired themes for extraordinary windows, mosaics, art glass décor, and most notably, lamps. Our Modgy draws inspiration from scarlet blooms that play across the surface of the Poppy Shade – one of the 132 Tiffany lamps in the collection at the New-York Historical Society. Designed by Clara Driscoll, Tiffany’s innovative manager of the Women’s Glass Cutting Department (the Tiffany Girls), it features her ingenious idea of incorporating a brass filigree overlay, giving intricate detail to the piece.

Leaded glass windows were among Louis C. Tiffany’s (American 1848-1933) most significant works. This beautiful Modgy is inspired by one of the five panels which originally comprised “Good Shepherd with Landscape,” designed by Frederick Wilson (American 1858-1932). Two of the panels are in the collection of the New-York Historical Society and reflect quiet moments in nature. The panel adapted here captures the misty blue hues of a lakeside morning as purple irises strive for the first rays of sunlight.

On January 31, 1890, van Gogh’s brother Theo announced the birth of his son, Vincent Willem van Gogh. In celebration of his newly arrived namesake, Vincent immediately began painting. He selected the almond tree to symbolize new life as the tree blooms as early as February, heralding the coming of spring. Different from Vincent’s other works, the influence of Japanese prints is clear in the positioning of the tree and the boldly outlined branches. The Starry Night, 1889 Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890) “The sight of the stars always makes me dream,” Vincent van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. The Starry Night, perhaps his most famous work, was completed a year before his death. Based on the view from his bedroom window at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Vincent painted the scene in studio on the ground floor. In February 1888, Vincent van Gogh left Paris and traveled to Arles in the south of France. There he painted the first of his nightscapes. Working under a street light, next to a café, he endeavored to capture the light of the gas lamps on the terrace against a background of darkened buildings and twinkling stars. More than a century later, it is still possible to go to the same café on the Place du Forum in Arles, and sit under the iconic yellow awning. This landscape panel from Tiffany Studios was originally the centerpiece of a ten-panel window designed for the landing of a massive marble staircase in the Pittsburgh home of Richard B. Mellon (1858–1933). Mellon, a member of the influential banking family, built the sixty-room house in 1908–9. The panel’s design makes brilliant use of the reforms brought to glassmaking by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Louis C. Tiffany Pink Peony Known as a leader of the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements, Louis C. Tiffany (1848-1943) and his designers used his trademark favrile glass to express nature-inspired themes for extraordinary lamps and windows. In line with the horticultural trends of the early 20th Century, the cottage garden was a source of inspiration for Tiffany’s designers. This Modgy is adapted from a Tiffany shade in the collection of the New-York Historical Society. Frank Lloyd Wright March Balloons The work of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is known worldwide as pivotal to the development of modern architecture. Through an understanding of our relationship with the natural world, Wright’s designs were inspired by organic forms. Wright created this abstract design as one of a series of covers based on monthly themes for Liberty Magazine in 1927. The finished designs were never published because the magazine thought they were too abstract and radical. Candace Wheeler (New York, 1827-1923) was the first woman to work professionally in the decorative arts in America. An early feminist, she promoted careers in the arts for women and equality in the workplace. Wheeler founded the Society of Domestic Arts, which empowered women to turn domestic arts into financial independence. Her success led to a partnership with Louis C. Tiffany in a textile firm producing home décor. Our lively motif was inspired by Wheeler’s Bees with Honeycomb, designed in 1881 for Mark Twain’s Connecticut home. Sea Turtles Hawksbill sea turtles, named for their pointed beaks, are found in tropical oceans. Often traveling vast distances, females always return to the beach where they hatched to lay their own eggs. Only around 1 in 1000 hatchlings survive to adulthood. An endangered species, these gentle creatures are threatened by fishing gear, pollution, and coral reef destruction from climate change. What can we do to help? Never leave holes on the beach. Turtle hatchlings, crawling to the safety of the ocean, can fall and become trapped in holes, leaving them vulnerable to predators. Reducing waste by purchasing reusable and recyclable products is also great way to start.

Cherry blossoms, or sakura, herald the advent of spring and symbolize renewal. America’s introduction to these lovely trees began in 1885 when writer, photographer, and first female board member of the National Geographic Society, Eliza Scidmore, returned from a trip to Japan. She began a campaign to plant the trees along the waterfront of the Potomac River to beautify the Capital. Eventually, Japan became aware of the plan and in 1912 the mayor of Tokyo gifted over 3000 trees in a gesture of friendship to America. Modgy drew inspiration from the profusion of blooms that grace Cherry Blossom festivals in Washington D.C., Japan, and across the globe.

Throughout time, sailing has been instrumental in helping civilizations to develop into thriving nations. Allowing for greater and faster mobility, sailboats have been used for transport, trade and exploration. Historically, sailing was largely an occupation for the privileged classes. In the 17th Century the art first became a sport in Holland. In 1660, it was introduced and ultimately popularized in England, eventually spreading to the American colonies.
