Tired of city life and the cold, Vincent van Gogh left Paris in February 1888 and traveled to the south of France to live in Arles. It was here that he painted the first of his nightscapes. Working outside under a street light, he set up his easel next to a café, looking to capture the garish light of the gas lamps on the terrace against a background of darkened buildings and twinkling stars. In the distance, a horse-drawn coach approaches, and a couple crosses the street to join the other patrons at the café.
More than a century later, it is still possible to go to the same café on the Place du Forum in Arles, and sit under the iconic yellow awning.
Our delightful Apron celebrates the light and color of an evening under the stars.
