This landscape panel from Tiffany Studios was originally the centerpiece of a ten-panel window designed for the landing of a massive marble staircase in the Pittsburgh home of Richard B. Mellon (1858–1933). Mellon, a member of the influential banking family, built the sixty-room house in 1908–9. The panel’s design makes brilliant use of the reforms brought to glassmaking by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Candace Wheeler (New York, 1827-1923) was the first woman to work professionally in the decorative arts in America. An early feminist, she promoted careers in the arts for women and equality in the workplace. Wheeler founded the Society of Domestic Arts, which empowered women to turn domestic arts into financial independence. Her success led to a partnership with Louis C. Tiffany in a textile firm producing home décor. Our lively motif was inspired by Wheeler’s Bees with Honeycomb, designed in 1881 for Mark Twain’s Connecticut home. Cherry blossoms, or sakura, herald the advent of spring and symbolize renewal. America’s introduction to these lovely trees began in 1885 when writer, photographer, and first female board member of the National Geographic Society, Eliza Scidmore, returned from a trip to Japan. She began a campaign to plant the trees along the waterfront of the Potomac River to beautify the Capital. Eventually, Japan became aware of the plan and in 1912 the mayor of Tokyo gifted over 3000 trees in a gesture of friendship to America. Modgy drew inspiration from the profusion of blooms that grace Cherry Blossom festivals in Washington D.C., Japan, and across the globe.

Frank Lloyd Wright March Balloons The work of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is known worldwide as pivotal to the development of modern architecture. Through an understanding of our relationship with the natural world, Wright’s designs were inspired by organic forms. Wright created this abstract design as one of a series of covers based on monthly themes for Liberty Magazine in 1927. The finished designs were never published because the magazine thought they were too abstract and radical. In the 19th century, naturalist/painter John J. Audubon sounded the alarm about vanishing nature. He noted in 1816, “Our Parakeets are very rapidly diminishing where 25 years ago they were plentiful, scarcely any are now to be seen.” The Carolina Parakeet - the only parrot native to the U.S. - became extinct in 1920. The species lives on in Audubon’s brilliant watercolor, as a pandemonium of parakeets jostle together in harmony. They remind us to appreciate and cherish our fragile ecosystem. John J. Leaded glass windows were among Louis C. Tiffany’s (American 1848-1933) most significant works. This beautiful Modgy is inspired by one of the five panels which originally comprised “Good Shepherd with Landscape,” designed by Frederick Wilson (American 1858-1932). Two of the panels are in the collection of the New-York Historical Society and reflect quiet moments in nature. The panel adapted here captures the misty blue hues of a lakeside morning as purple irises strive for the first rays of sunlight.

Louis C. Tiffany Pink Peony Known as a leader of the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements, Louis C. Tiffany (1848-1943) and his designers used his trademark favrile glass to express nature-inspired themes for extraordinary lamps and windows. In line with the horticultural trends of the early 20th Century, the cottage garden was a source of inspiration for Tiffany’s designers. This Modgy is adapted from a Tiffany shade in the collection of the New-York Historical Society. Known as a leader of the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements, Louis C. Tiffany (1848-1943) and his designers used his trademark favrile glass nature-inspired themes for extraordinary windows, mosaics, art glass décor, and most notably, lamps. Our Modgy draws inspiration from scarlet blooms that play across the surface of the Poppy Shade – one of the 132 Tiffany lamps in the collection at the New-York Historical Society. Designed by Clara Driscoll, Tiffany’s innovative manager of the Women’s Glass Cutting Department (the Tiffany Girls), it features her ingenious idea of incorporating a brass filigree overlay, giving intricate detail to the piece.

Pioneer of abstract art, Piet Mondrian (Dutch, 1872-1944) developed a unique style that is much emulated today. A leading figure of the De Stijl art movement in the early 20th century, his work aligned with the movement’s basic premise of reducing art and architecture to simplified geometric shapes and primary colors. Eventually breaking with the movement, he evolved his own modern aesthetic, calling it Neoplasticism. This concept limited his palette to the three primary colors, three values of black, white and gray, and vertical and horizontal lines, ultimately resulting in his most iconic paintings.

In February 1888, Vincent van Gogh left Paris and traveled to Arles in the south of France. There he painted the first of his nightscapes. Working under a street light, next to a café, he endeavored to capture the light of the gas lamps on the terrace against a background of darkened buildings and twinkling stars. More than a century later, it is still possible to go to the same café on the Place du Forum in Arles, and sit under the iconic yellow awning. Our delightful Modgy Vase celebrates the light and color of an evening under the stars.
