Known as a leader of the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements, Louis C. Tiffany (1848-1943) and his designers used his trademark favrile glass nature-inspired themes for extraordinary windows, mosaics, art glass décor, and most notably, lamps. Our Modgy draws inspiration from scarlet blooms that play across the surface of the Poppy Shade – one of the 132 Tiffany lamps in the collection at the New-York Historical Society. Designed by Clara Driscoll, Tiffany’s innovative manager of the Women’s Glass Cutting Department (the Tiffany Girls), it features her ingenious idea of incorporating a brass filigree overlay, giving intricate detail to the piece.

Candace Wheeler (New York, 1827-1923) was the first woman to work professionally in the decorative arts in America. An early feminist, she promoted careers in the arts for women and equality in the workplace. Wheeler founded the Society of Domestic Arts, which empowered women to turn domestic arts into financial independence. Her success led to a partnership with Louis C. Tiffany in a textile firm producing home décor. Our lively motif was inspired by Wheeler’s Bees with Honeycomb, designed in 1881 for Mark Twain’s Connecticut home. Louis C. Tiffany Pink Peony Known as a leader of the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements, Louis C. Tiffany (1848-1943) and his designers used his trademark favrile glass to express nature-inspired themes for extraordinary lamps and windows. In line with the horticultural trends of the early 20th Century, the cottage garden was a source of inspiration for Tiffany’s designers. In February 1888, Vincent van Gogh left Paris and traveled to Arles in the south of France. There he painted the first of his nightscapes. Working under a street light, next to a café, he endeavored to capture the light of the gas lamps on the terrace against a background of darkened buildings and twinkling stars. More than a century later, it is still possible to go to the same café on the Place du Forum in Arles, and sit under the iconic yellow awning.
