In February 1888, Vincent van Gogh left Paris and traveled to Arles in the south of France. There he painted the first of his nightscapes. Working under a street light, next to a café, he endeavored to capture the light of the gas lamps on the terrace against a background of darkened buildings and twinkling stars. More than a century later, it is still possible to go to the same café on the Place du Forum in Arles, and sit under the iconic yellow awning. Pioneer of abstract art, Piet Mondrian (Dutch, 1872-1944) developed a unique style that is much emulated today. A leading figure of the De Stijl art movement in the early 20th century, his work aligned with the movement’s basic premise of reducing art and architecture to simplified geometric shapes and primary colors. Eventually breaking with the movement, he evolved his own modern aesthetic, calling it Neoplasticism. This concept limited his palette to the three primary colors, three values of black, white and gray, and vertical and horizontal lines, ultimately resulting in his most iconic paintings.

Sunflowers were among Vincent van Gogh’s favorite subjects to paint. His most famous series featured more than a dozen sunflowers arranged in an earthenware pot. The moment he painted his first bouquet, he proclaimed to his brother Theo, “I’m painting with the gusto of a Marseillais eating bouillabaisse, which won’t surprise you when it’s a question of painting large Sunflowers.” Excited, he painted four canvases in quick succession. Leaded glass windows were among Louis C. Tiffany’s (American 1848-1933) most significant works. This beautiful Modgy is inspired by one of the five panels which originally comprised “Good Shepherd with Landscape,” designed by Frederick Wilson (American 1858-1932). Two of the panels are in the collection of the New-York Historical Society and reflect quiet moments in nature. The panel adapted here captures the misty blue hues of a lakeside morning as purple irises strive for the first rays of sunlight.

On January 31, 1890, van Gogh’s brother Theo announced the birth of his son, Vincent Willem van Gogh. In celebration of his newly arrived namesake, Vincent immediately began painting. He selected the almond tree to symbolize new life as the tree blooms as early as February, heralding the coming of spring. Different from Vincent’s other works, the influence of Japanese prints is clear in the positioning of the tree and the boldly outlined branches. Frank Lloyd Wright March Balloons The work of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is known worldwide as pivotal to the development of modern architecture. Through an understanding of our relationship with the natural world, Wright’s designs were inspired by organic forms. Wright created this abstract design as one of a series of covers based on monthly themes for Liberty Magazine in 1927. The finished designs were never published because the magazine thought they were too abstract and radical. Sea Turtles Hawksbill sea turtles, named for their pointed beaks, are found in tropical oceans. Often traveling vast distances, females always return to the beach where they hatched to lay their own eggs. Only around 1 in 1000 hatchlings survive to adulthood. An endangered species, these gentle creatures are threatened by fishing gear, pollution, and coral reef destruction from climate change. What can we do to help? Never leave holes on the beach. Turtle hatchlings, crawling to the safety of the ocean, can fall and become trapped in holes, leaving them vulnerable to predators. Reducing waste by purchasing reusable and recyclable products is also great way to start.

This landscape panel from Tiffany Studios was originally the centerpiece of a ten-panel window designed for the landing of a massive marble staircase in the Pittsburgh home of Richard B. Mellon (1858–1933). Mellon, a member of the influential banking family, built the sixty-room house in 1908–9. The panel’s design makes brilliant use of the reforms brought to glassmaking by Louis Comfort Tiffany.
