In the 19th century, naturalist/painter John J. Audubon sounded the alarm about vanishing nature. He noted in 1816, “Our Parakeets are very rapidly diminishing where 25 years ago they were plentiful, scarcely any are now to be seen.” The Carolina Parakeet - the only parrot native to the U.S. - became extinct in 1920. The species lives on in Audubon’s brilliant watercolor, as a pandemonium of parakeets jostle together in harmony. They remind us to appreciate and cherish our fragile ecosystem. John J. In 1893, Louis C. Tiffany created a chapel for the World's Columbian Exposition, to promote his newly founded firm, Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company; it won many design awards. Subsequently, it was moved to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. After suffering water damage, Tiffany had the chapel reinstalled at his home. Following his death in 1933, portions were sold. In 1957, a fire damaged what remained. Jeannette McKean, of the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum, ultimately purchased the chapel remains and began its restoration. After 100 years, it was reopened to the public in 1999, and its timeless beauty can be enjoyed again.

Known as a leader of the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements, Louis C. Tiffany (1848-1943) and his designers used his trademark favrile glass to express nature-inspired themes for extraordinary lamps and windows.

Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890) was a Post-Impressionist painter whose revolutionary works continue to captivate and inspire to this day. He created over 2100 works including 860 oil paintings, remarkably within a ten-year period. His dedication to art was absolute. Painting was a remedy and a lifeline to which he returned repeatedly to help himself heal after episodes of psychiatric disorder. Vincent’s use of vivid color and expressive brushstrokes evoke the passion and emotion he felt as he painted. “I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart,” he wrote.

John James Audubon’s (1785-1851) watercolors and his double elephant folio The Birds of America (1827–38) are recognized as major accomplishments in American art.
